Waiting for Wednesday’s cold front

Wednesday won't be a washout, but we'll want to watch for a few heavy storms as a cold front slices through the Carolinas.

The warm start to the workweek continues this Tuesday afternoon as highs once again skirt near 80Β° across the Piedmont and Foothills, but big changes lurk ahead. A sharp cold front will slice its way into the Carolinas by Wednesday afternoon, bringing scattered rain chances while cutting down temperatures into the back half of the week. Wednesday won’t be a washout – in fact, most communities dry out by the afternoon – but we’ll need to watch for a few heavy storms through the morning hours as the front sweeps by.

Highs around the Metro will fall from near 80Β° on Wednesday to the upper 60s and lower 70s on Thursday and Friday. Lows will dip into the 30s and 40s across the board as we wake up Friday morning; patchy frost is possible in the High Country as we kick off the final day of the workweek. Rain chances appear to be few and far between beyond Wednesday. The weekend ahead looks dry and comfortable as afternoon temperatures hang around the mid-70s in the Queen City.

The tropics aren’t done yet, either. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is monitoring a developing system well east of the Caribbean that has a 90% chance of becoming Tropical Storm Jerry this week. While future Jerry likely becomes a hurricane by the weekend, virtually all models curve the storm away from the U.S. mainland. While the NHC isn’t monitoring the Carolina coastline right now, we’ll want to keep a close eye on a coastal low that will develop along our incoming front by the end of the week. This system could lead to more erosion and heavy rain along North Carolina beaches between Friday and Sunday.
