GASTONIA, N.C. – The Gaston County Sheriff’s Office warned the public Thursday of scammers impersonating deputies.
The scams begin with a phone call from a real government number with the individuals identifying themselves as names of current employees. The sheriff’s office said the scammers also have enough knowledge of the employees to be perceived as credible.
Then, the scammers try to convince citizens that they’ve broken laws that include failing to appear in court or failure to appear for jury duty.
The citizens are then threatened to be arrested unless a payment is made. Deputies said the scammers threaten with additional charges to get the citizens to cooperate.
Anyone receiving a call like this are encouraged to call 704-869-6800 to verify that you spoke with an employee of the sheriff’s office.
