BUXTON, N.C. — Another oceanfront home on North Carolina’s Outer Banks collapsed into the Atlantic Ocean over the weekend, marking the 11th house to fall since September. The house was unoccupied at the time of the collapse. In total, 22 homes have been lost to the surf along this fragile stretch of coastline since 2020.
The latest collapse follows weeks of relentless coastal erosion fueled by Hurricanes Humberto and Imedla, which brought high seas and coastal erosion. The damage was made worse by a powerful nor’easter and elevated tides from a full Moon, further weakening already vulnerable shorelines.
