Tropical Storm Melissa forms in Caribbean

Most models keep Melissa away from the U.S. mainland, but this system will be one to watch this week.

Tropical Track 2

MIAMI, FL — We’re in the homestretch of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, but the tropics remain active as we head into the back third of October.

Tropical Storm Melissa formed in the central Caribbean late Tuesday morning, birthed from a tropical wave your WCCB weather team has been tracking since last week. The fledgling system is currently packing winds approaching 50 mph – strong for a freshly named storm – and is expected to strengthen as it slowly drifts westward over the coming days.

Tropical Track 22

The official National Hurricane Center (NHC) forecast track doesn’t move Melissa around much as it steadily materializes into a Category 1 hurricane by the weekend. Most models keep Melissa away from the U.S. mainland, but we’ll want to watch this system closely as it gains strength.

Tropical Frequency

Hurricane season officially wraps up on November 30th, but named storms can and will form any time of the year when conditions are right. Your WCCB weather team will keep you weather-wise through the rest of this month and next.
