CMPD officer’s actions under investigation after fight at West Charlotte High School

Parents are outraged as a shocking video continues to circulate online, showing a CMPD officer slamming a West Charlotte High School student to the ground.

This was all during a fight on campus Friday.

The district says that the fight started between several students after class in the bus lot.

In the video, an officer can be seen slamming a student to the ground. The girl’s head hit the ground and she appeared to be knocked unconscious.

Now, CMPD says that she was taken to the hospital and has been released. Both CMPD and CMS are investigating the incident.

“And that’s what I really want to say is that we want to be thorough,” Deputy Chief Ryan Butler said. “If there’s a family member who would like to speak to us, I assure you we would like to speak to them. If there’s a staff member that wants to speak to us, we want to talk to them. Student, I don’t care who you are, you go to school every week, you go to school two days a week. If you were there, we are interested in speaking with you.”

In a statement to WCCB, CMS officials say they are also investigating, saying “while we are unable to share details regarding an ongoing investigation, we do want to assure our community that we are taking this situation very seriously.”

CMPD says the officer involved has been placed on leave while they investigate.
