Wet & wintry mess to close out workweek

The wintry weather will likely be limited to the I-40 corridor and northward, but your Friday morning commute will be a mess regardless of what comes down in your backyard.

Happy Friday Eve! Our final day of the workweek looks to be a mess, so enjoy this dry and warmer Thursday while it lasts. That said, today won’t be a stunner by any stretch of the imagination. Expect mostly cloudy skies and highs struggling to clear the mid-to-lower 50s across the Piedmont and Foothills for this penultimate day of the workweek. The drab skies only become grayer overnight as an expansive storm system lifts toward the Carolinas from the southwest. Precipitation begins to push into the WCCB Charlotte viewing area shortly after midnight – kicking off what could be a wintry mess for some Friday morning.

If you’re dreaming of a winter wonderland around the Queen City, keep dreaming – the ice and snow will be limited to the I-40 corridor and northward, and most of the meaningful accumulations will stay above 2000′. That said, prepare for a very messy Friday morning commute as the rain, sleet, and snow slide through the Carolinas. While Charlotte likely remains flake-free, we can expect about a half-inch of rain around the Metro and southward. The trickiest part of the forecast lies along the I-40 corridor; multiple transitions between a wet wintry mix and plain rain are possible throughout the morning into the afternoon. Snow and sleet totals along the interstate below 2000′ likely remain under an inch, but some localized amounts south of the NC-VA border may approach 2″. High Country communities above 2000′ will likely see mainly snow, which will total roughly 2-4″; locally higher amounts approaching 6″ are possible above 4000′. Most of the moisture will clear to the north and east by sunset Friday.

The clouds stick around through the weekend as a chain of storm systems pass to our southeast. While a few scattered showers may roll through the Metro and southeastward at times on Saturday and Sunday, most of the WCCB Charlotte viewing area stays dry through the start of December’s second week. Highs will once again struggle to clear the 30s and 40s across the board this weekend.
