DHS begins slashing FEMA staff

Many FEMA employees are starting the new year without jobs.

They were notified on New Year’s Eve via email their positions would not be renewed.

The impacted workers are part of FEMA’s Cadre of On-Call Response and Recovery teams. Those are the people who are generally among the first federal boots on the ground during disasters.

A FEMA spokesperson pointed out the positions are term-limited and fluctuate based on disaster activity.

Approximately 8,000 employees on those teams work full-time hours on temporary contracts. Sources say so far about 50 workers have received termination emails.
