Warm & wet start to weekend
Many locations around the Metro and northwest will see upwards of 1" of rain through Saturday evening.
Happy Friday! Sadly, our brief time in the sun has come to an end as an expansive rainmaking system sweeps into the Carolinas from the west. Scattered showers will roll into the High Country by the mid-afternoon before spreading into the I-85 corridor in the evening. The most widespread rain arrives overnight into Saturday. Despite the clouds and the rain, many locations around the Metro and southeast will approach record high territory in the upper 60s and lower 70s.
Even warmer air swells into the Carolinas for the first half of the weekend as a cold front squeezes warmer air through the WCCB Charlotte viewing area. Afternoon temperatures should reach into the lower 70s around the Queen City as scattered showers and even a few thunderstorms roll through the Piedmont. Panthers fans should expect soggy tailgate conditions before rain chances slowly dwindle after kickoff at 4:30. Southwesterly winds gusting up to 35 mph will make it a difficult game for players and fans alike. While a stray shower or storm could linger past sunset, virtually all of the moisture clears the western half of the Carolinas by midnight.
Much colder air settles into the WCCB Charlotte viewing area on Sunday. Highs will struggle to clear the 30s and 40s across the board as stiff northwesterly winds pour into the Carolinas. Mostly sunny skies will at least make the cold more tolerable as afternoon temperatures reach the lower 50s around the Metro and southward to close out the weekend. A hard freeze will settle in across our 22 counties as lows dip into the teens and 20s waking up Monday morning. The chilly air sticks around through much of next week, so enjoy the warmer conditions over the next two days while they last.
