Dr. Raynard Washington’s resignation as Mecklenburg Health Director effective immediately
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Health Director Dr. Raynard Washington will be resigning as Mecklenburg County Health Director effective Tuesday.
New Jerseyβs Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill has nominated Dr. Washington as the next Department of Health Commissioner.
Dr. Washington joined the County in March of 2020 as deputy health director and was promoted to director in 2021. During his tenure with the county, he coordinated the county’s Covid-19 response, implementing a countywide testing and immunization program focused on vulnerable communities.
He also established North Carolina’s first Office of Violence Prevention and created The Way Forward strategic plan for a data-driven public health approach to reducing violence.
Dr. Kimberly Scott was appointed by the Board of County Commissioners to serve as Interim Health Director.
