State of Emergency issued in Mecklenburg County ahead of winter storm

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Mecklenburg County has declared a State of Emergency ahead of the winter storm expected to hit North Carolina for the second consecutive weekend.

This joint declaration, made by Mecklenburg County, City of Charlotte, Town of Cornelius, Town of Davidson, Town of Huntersville, Town of Matthews, Town of Mint Hill, and Town of Pineville, helps protect lives and property as officials brace for the impacts of the winter storm.

This State of Emergency is effective starting today, Friday, Jan. 30 at 5 p.m. It will remain until it’s safe to end it.

This plan has four main functions:

  • Prioritizes saving lives
  • Addresses immediate needs such as rescue, medical assistance, food, and shelter
  • Restores essential facilities for residents and visitors
  • Mitigates hazards threatening lives, property, the environment, and the economy

The State of Emergency also prohibits price increases and allows for increased staffing for public safety and other city services to respond.
