Snowy roads and brutal cold continue

Tracking record snow in the Queen City

While we are still waiting for the final totals, we do know our ongoing snow storm is already the highest snow-producing storm in the Queen City since 2004! Snow will continue through about midnight for most of us, although it should begin to lighten up some after sunset. Many areas will reach double-digit totals before all is said and done. After the snow stops falling, the big story will be the cleanup and brutal cold on the way.

Low temperatures plummet tonight into the single digits to low teens across the Piedmont. The wind will make it feel even colder with feels like temperatures below 0 for many! So it is imperative that you bundle up with multiple layers and protect exposed skin as these temperatures can lead to frostbite very quickly. The brutal cold continues into tomorrow afternoon where we likely don’t get above freezing. So don’t expect road conditions to naturally improve tomorrow. Sunday night we plummet again with lows in the single digits as our snow pack keeps us in the freezer.

Monday afternoon looks to be the first real chance at any melting. Although temperatures only climb 5 or so degrees above freezing, so don’t expect much improvement. By Tuesday we should finally make a run at 40 and nightly lows stay above freezing as some light rain is possible. From Wednesday on we keep highs above 40 but lows continue to drop below freezing. So the moral of the story is it’s going to take some time to melt all of this snow. I’d expect school closures or delays much of if not all of this week due to snowy and icy roads.

Looking out into the long range I’d assume that pesky groundhog will see his shadow as no real signs of spring-like weather look likely over the next 10 days at least. Bundle up, avoid travel if at all possible, and stick with the WCCB weather team for the latest!
