Warmer end to workweek, heavy mountain snow possible
The Piedmont & Foothills only see a stray shower or two at best this afternoon, but the High Country likely sees a widespread 2-6"+ through Saturday morning.
Happy Friday! The Charlotte Metro likely sees its warmest day in two weeks this afternoon as highs swell into the upper 40s and lower 50s across the Piedmont & Foothills. We’ll have to watch for a few stray showers in the lower elevations later in the day as a clipper system rolls into the Carolinas from the northwest, but most of the moisture will get hung up in the mountains, where we could see some heavy snow. Short-range models are in good agreement that communities in Ashe, Avery, and Watauga counties at or above 3000′ will see a widespread 3-6″, with locally higher amounts possible through Saturday morning. Gusts may approach 50+ mph at times in our mountain counties.
The incoming cold front will cut down temperatures this weekend; highs will once again struggle to clear the 20s, 30s, and lower 40s on Saturday and Sunday, despite plentiful sunshine. The good news for those sick of the cold is that much warmer air settles into the Carolinas next week. Highs likely soar into the 60s for many across the Piedmont & Foothills between Tuesday & Thursday, which would easily be the warmest air we’ve seen in at least a month. We may have to watch for a few rain chances within this timeframe, as well.
