UNC Board of Governors approves to increase in-state undergraduate tuition for new students

The UNC Board of Governors approved Thursday to increase in-state undergraduate tuition for the first time in nine years.

The 3% increase, averaging about $125 per student, will bring the average tuition from $4,684 to $4,809 in 2026-27. This will only apply to new students, and current students will not see a change in their tuition.

β€œLow tuition is at the heart of our compact with the people of North Carolina,” said UNC System President Peter Hans. β€œWe’re focused on reducing administrative costs, keeping student debt down, and making sure every UNC degree delivers value for our graduates.”

The board also voted to increase mandatory student fees by 1% in 2026-27. The combined annual tuition and fees will average $7,644 next academic year across 12 non-NC Promise universities.

In-state undergraduate tuition for NC Promise schools will stay the same at $500 per semester.
