ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. (News Release) – On Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at approximately 9:08 a.m., deputies with the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office were notified of a gunshot victim who had arrived at the emergency department at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center.

The victim, 24-year-old Jason Michael Wyatt Jr., reported that he had been exercising in the woods near the 2900 block of Old Mocksville Road when he was shot in the calf by an unknown person. Wyatt stated that he then drove himself to the hospital for treatment.

Man Shoots Himself To Avoid Court

During the initial investigation, deputies noted inconsistencies in Wyatt’s account of the incident. Investigators also learned that Wyatt was scheduled to appear in court in Salisbury later that morning for a hearing.

While attempting to locate the reported crime scene, investigators went to Wyatt’s residence and interviewed witnesses whose statements contradicted Wyatt’s version of events, raising further suspicion.

As the investigation continued, detectives determined that Wyatt had in fact shot himself at a residence located at 230 Pinevale Drive. Detectives obtained a search warrant for the residence, where they recovered evidence supporting their findings. During the search, investigators also located illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Investigators further determined that Wyatt shot himself in an attempt to avoid appearing in court that morning, as he feared he would be sentenced to prison.

After being released from the hospital, Wyatt was arrested and charged with Filing a False Police Report and Resisting, Delaying, or Obstructing a Public Officer. He was transported to the Rowan County Detention Center, where he was placed under a $2,500 secured bond.

Wyatt is scheduled to appear in court on these charges on March 10.
