Mecklenburg Co. Commission District 1 GOP candidate drops out of race

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. – The only Republican running for the Mecklenburg County Commission District One seat is dropping out of the race. Aaron Marin says he has fled the Huntersville area after someone allegedly fired shots into his home six weeks ago. He says police have made no arrests in the case, and that he and his family live in “constant fear.”

Marin said in an email, “As a direct result of this incident and the ongoing lack of resolution, I have made the difficult decision to resign from my candidacy for County Commissioner for District 1. The primary reason is that I will no longer be living in District 1 and, therefore, would not be able to properly represent its residents.” He is calling for Huntersville town leaders to invest in “stronger surveillance, better infrastructure, and a more urgent response to violent crime.”

The Republican party executive committee can replace Marin ahead of the mid-term election, but that will need to happen before mid-August for that name to make it on the ballot. That person would face off against Democrat Morris McAdoo.
