Golf tournament creating economic boom for region

The Truist Championship at Quail Hollow is putting Charlotte in the global spotlight this week, and the payoff could be huge.

Governor Josh Stein says the golf tournament is expected to drive $125 million in economic impact for the Charlotte region with hotels, restaurants, rideshares, and local businesses all cashing in.

Stein calls it more than just golf, saying it’s a major economic win that puts the Queen City front and center.

β€œThis is going to be a great weekend for the course, great weekend for Charlotte, great weekend for North Carolina. The golfing world from around the world is going to have their eyes on Charlotte, North Carolina,” Stein said.

The governor also talked about Major Lyles’ decision to resign from office.Β

β€œI’m disappointed just because she has been such a great partner for me. I’ve known her for many, many years and her heart is for Charlotte,” Stein said. β€œShe wants nothing but what’s going to be good for the people of Charlotte. Obviously, I respect her decision to step down. Wish her nothing but the best.”

Lyles announced Thursday she would be stepping down June 30th. There’s no word yet on who will replace her.
