Crews contained a fire that started from a gas leak in Matthews on Wednesday.
It happened just before noon Wednesday afternoon near the intersection of Pleasant Plains Road and Morningwood Drive.
According to Matthews Fire & EMS, firefighters observed a hole where the gas leak was coming from and retreated to form a plan. While away, a small spark from the power lines ignited the natural gas, causing a small explosion and a fire, officials said.
Multiple agencies, including Matthews Fire, Wesley Chapel Fire Department, Stallings Fire Department, and the Charlotte Fire Department, were dispatched to the scene. The fire was put out around 2:30 p.m.
No injuries were reported but several nearby homes were evacuated out of an abundance of caution.
Morningwood Drive was closed for several hours but has since reopened.
