South Carolina man charged with hate crime after allegedly defacing buildings at Charlotte Jewish Complex

A South Carolina man is facing federal hate crime charges after allegedly posting Nazi symbols at the Jewish Community Center in south Charlotte.

It happened earlier this year on Jan. 19.

Investigators say 24-year-old Dalton Mullis, from Indian Land, is seen on surveillance video defacing several buildings within the Shalom Park complex off Providence Road. It is also alleged that Mullis defaced the buildings by affixing threatening, antisemitic flyers.

Mullis is also accused of making antisemitic social media posts between January and April 2026.

“The individual arrested yesterday is alleged to have distributed threatening materials at community institutions in an attempt to create fear or intimidate individuals based on their religious beliefs,” said FBI Charlotte Special Agent in Charge Reid Davis. “These acts undermine public safety and violate federal law.”

Mullis was arrested Thursday and made his first court appearance on Friday. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 20 years in prison.
