STATESVILLE, N.C. – The Statesville Police Department making the community aware of a black bear spotted in the Martin Luther King Jr. Park area of Statesville. The department is reminding the public that black bears, while surprising to see, tend to occasionally wander into developed areas.
At this time, the bear has not shown any aggressive behavior. Deputies want to remind the community of the following safety measures.
- Keep a safe distance.
- Do not approach, feed, or attempt to interact with it.
- Keep children and pets away from the animal.
- Give the bear plenty of space and allow it to move away naturally.
- Resist the urge to take a close-up selfie.
