Juneteenth Art Fest celebrates creativity, culture and community

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Juneteenth celebrations are underway across the Queen City. The Juneteenth Art Fest just wrapped up at the Boardwalk in University City.

Organizers say the free event is a celebration of creativity, culture, and community. Participants got to create their own art and Juneteenth-themed paintings, and there were more than 70 local vendors.

We spoke with one artist who was working on a live painting of Harriet Tubman. Gerald Fauntroy says, “This one is titled Saint Harriet. Harriet Tubman, if you really think about it, she risked her life for other people’s lives.”

Juneteenth commemorates the day slaves in Texas found out they were free when Union troops made the announcement in Galveston Bay on June 19th, 1865.
