HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. – A Huntersville police officer has been charged after allegedly reporting to duty impaired, according to police.

Police said Officer Michael Ciarleglio displaced signs of impairment Wednesday morning. A preliminary investigation resulted in Ciarleglio being charged with driving while impaired.

“Any time a law enforcement officer is accused of breaking the law, it damages the trust that is essential to our profession,” said Huntersville Police Chief Brian Vaughan. “We take these matters extremely seriously, and we will not excuse or overlook conduct that falls short of the standards we expect from every member of this department. Our community deserves officers who uphold the law, and when those standards are violated, we will act decisively and appropriately.”

No other details were released.

Police said Vaughan issued a recommendation to the Town for Ciarleglio to be terminated immediately.
