18-year-old charged with murder in Cleveland County

LAWNDALE, N.C. – An 18-year-old man has been charged with murder after a shooting occurred in Cleveland County.

Cleveland County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a discharged firearm near 211 Boyles Road off of NC Highway 10. Deputies found an individual unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the upper chest. Authorities attempted to make lifesaving measures while waiting for EMS to arrive but the victim died at the scene.

Deputies obtained a search warrant for a Lawndale residence on Newfield Court after initial investigation to find the individual suspected of the crime. Evidence was found  connecting 18-year-old Canyun Castillo to the incident. Castillo was located at the residence and taken into custody.

Castillo was charged with murder and received no bond.

Sheriff Alan Norman stated, “Our deputies responded quickly to a tragic and serious incident, and they immediately went to work gathering information, following leads, and pursuing evidence. Their dedication and commitment to this investigation are a testament to the professionalism of the men and women of the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office. While this investigation is still ongoing, I am proud of the work our deputies have done to identify and take the suspect into custody.”

This investigation remains ongoing.
