Repeat offender arrested after random assault on woman

CHARLOTTE, NC. – A disturbing video circulating online shows a repeat offender ranting before punching a woman knocking her to the ground in Dilworth. Police say they were strangers.

Police arrested 32-year-old Di’Quan Hunt for assault with a deadly weapon Thursday. Hunt’s Instagram account shows multiple videos of him chasing a woman and another of the assault from July 30th where you can see Paper Skyscraper in the background. Bill Godwin owns the store on East Boulevard he says this incident raises multiple concerns.

“There’s a city camera that was pointed at this intersection where it took place that has been out of service for a year or two,” Godwin said. “Then it obviously brings up some more questions about mental health and how we handle that in the community.”

There are at least nine mugshots in the Mecklenburg County database for hunt dating back to 2023. He’s accused of pulling a knife on a stranger on the light rail platform back in December. Paperwork from that incident says he also had a black-colored axe in his rear waistband.

“They called him a frequent flyer and said he had just gotten let out after pepper spraying someone on the Light Rail,” a previous victim said. “I don’t know how he was out walking around.”

The victim from the previous assault says he’s concerned the courts failed to protect the community from Hunt.

“The cops came to arrest him, but that didn’t do any good because they only gave him basically three months,” the victim said. “He stayed in jail from December till March when our court date happened.”

The victim says based on Hunt’s history he believes should be doing at least 10 years in a detention center.

“People need to be held accountable. I know they, they talk about mental health. Well, you can get mental health treatment while you’re locked up,” the victim said.

Hunt is now in a medical facility in police custody. When he finishes treatment he will be taken to the Mecklenburg County detention center.

A statement from the family of the latest assault victim says, “”The victim is at home recovering. The family has requested the video not be shown. They want to express their thanks for all the support from the community during this difficult time.”

WCCB reached out to the City of Charlotte about the camera that the business owner says is broken. The city says the camera is functional but likely didn’t catch the incident because it’s pointed toward the traffic.
Police believe there could be other victims tied to hunt. If you have dealt with him call Crimestoppers at 704-334-1600.
