Kannapolis Police say they shot, killed man who was holding gun and trying to carjack drivers

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Investigators have released the name of a man shot and killed by Kannapolis Police officers last week. 33-year-old Lorenzo Gray died at the hospital.

Officers shot Gray after they say they saw him holding a gun and attempting to car jack vehicles at the intersection of South Main Street and Bethpage Road. It happened just before noon on Friday.

The officers involved, Lieutenant Justin Smith and Sergeant Matthew Hoehman, have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol.

A witness described what she saw before the shooting. Mikayla Isaacs tells WCCB, “He (Gray) was banging on the girl’s driver’s side window. Then he tried to grab to the backseat door and he did not get into the car. It was locked, thank goodness.”

No officers were hurt in the shooting. We’re told the SBI has now taken over the investigation.
