Court documents reveal new details about man accused of shooting CMPD officer

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Court records say Dionte McCracking was wearing a ski mask and cutting a power line with an angle grinder on Enderly Road when an officer spotted him Wednesday morning. Police say they were responding to a call about a suspicious person.

Police say the officer and McCracking fought over a gun before McCracking pulled the trigger multiple times aiming at the officers head. Police say he narrowly missed and hit the officers shoulder before he drove away from the scene.

“Our detectives, our officers have been working since they responded to that call to make sure that this individual was not a danger to the community,” CMPD Chief Estella Patterson said.

McCracking was found on Kings Ridge Drive where police say he was holed up in a stranger’s apartment and refused to leave for hours. SWAT teams eventually carried him out.

“Everybody worried out here. We don’t know if they gonna start shooting,” Anita Boswell Russell, Neighbor said. “This man just smoking, chilling I guess. ’cause he knew once the police got him, he wasn’t coming back.”

McCracking is accused of breaking and entering two local car dealerships in August. He was on pre-trial release at the time of the shooting. His latest charges include attempted first-degree murder, assault on a law enforcement officer and possession of a firearm by a felon.

A family member tells WCCB that McCracking has been shooting into their home. They were too scared to talk on camera, but a neighbor spoke for them and says McCracking should be locked up.

“Oh man. Relief, relief, relief. One bad apple off the streets,” the neighbor said.

The officer who was shot is in stable condition. McCracking is scheduled to appear in court again on October 1st.
