Flags of Remembrance on display in Uptown this weekend

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A sea of American flags are on display at Romare Bearden Park in Uptown, honoring each of the 2,977 people lost on September 11, 2001.

Flags are placed there each year by the Firefighter Steven Coakley Foundation. At a service Friday morning, attendee John Howell spoke with WCCB Charlotte about losing his brother on 9-11. Howell says, “My brother George was with Ladder 2 in Midtown Manhattan, and that morning he walked through the lobby of the North Tower and up the stairs into the fire in those buildings. They fell on top of him. And he made great sacrifice in the service of others.”

The flags will be on display at Romare Bearden Park until Sunday.
