NC Gov signs bill to temporarily suspend state gas tax but drivers won’t see impact immediately

RALEIGH, N.C. – Governor Josh Stein has signed a bipartisan bill temporarily suspending North Carolina’s gas tax to lower costs at the pump. The measure pauses the state’s 41-cents-per-gallon tax on gasoline and diesel from Saturday through November 30.

The move will cost more than $350 million in highway funding. Lawmakers are covering the deficit by tapping into the state’s $11 billion savings reserve.

Stein says, “This bill will deliver relief for North Carolina families. People who need real solutions, now.”

Drivers are warned that prices won’t drop immediately, as gas stations must first sell off existing fuel that was already taxed.
