Historic Latta Place re-development site breaks ground
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. – Mecklenburg County leaders broke ground on Monday on the redevelopment project at Latta Place in Huntersville. The project aims to transform the former plantation site by building a new visitor center and interpretive trail to tell the full, unbiased history of the enslaved and indigenous peoples who lived there.
County Manager Mike Bryant spoke about the long-term impact of the restoration. He says, “The true measure of this moment will not bear fruit at the end of today’s event, nor will it be realized with the official reopening. As a community, we must remember that the true measure of today will be exhibited in actions of those that visit this space.”
The project has been in development since 2021, and will serve as a permanent space for education and community healing.
