The Outer Banks’ only highway, NC-12, is closed because of pavement buckling. Β At landfall, the category two storm packed winds of more than 100 miles per hour. Β Tonight, state officials say they are glad the coast over-prepared.

“We are seeing some artificial reef debris coming onto several beaches, and we are also seeing downed trees inland, at this point in time,” said Governor McCrory.

Environmental experts are also checking reports of beach erosion and broken artificial reefs on some barrier islands.
