MOORESVILLE, NC — A school guidance counselor facing sex charges involving a student in Iredell County will face a judge Thursday.

Amy Saffos is charged with three counts of felony sexual activity with a student.  The school district fired her June 27.  Saffos worked at Lake Norman High School for almost eight years.  The school contacted the sheriff’s office last week.

A 17-year-old student told investigators he had sex with Saffos twice at school and a third time at a home in southern Iredell County.  She is in jail under a $175,000 bond, which her attorney, Adam Seifer, says is too high.

“People are going to assume the worst just because of what the bond is.  That’s bonds that you see for really high level felonies, you know, dangerous crimes,” said Seifer.

“There’s another incident that we have uncovered that occurred in a adjoining county,” said Detective Lieutenant Bill Hamby of the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.  “We’ve made contact with the agency in that county and made them aware of it.”

If convicted, Saffos would have to register as a sex offender.  She has a husband and two children.
