CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A new name on new case documents in the Bianca Tanner murder investigation. Β Tanner’s boyfriend, Angelo Grayson Smith, Junior, is accused of killing the mom and teacher and dumping her body. Β He was indicted by a grand jury on July 7th, and on his arrest warrant made public Monday appeared the name of a man CMPD has classified as a “witness.”Β

It’s unclear what 30-year-old Lawrence Briscoe was witness to: if he actually saw Tanner’s death or he saw her body being dumped, or something else. Β Chief Rodney Monroe made it clear the morning they found Tanner’s remains that it was a witness who led them to the wooded area off Calico Crossing Lane in southwest Charlotte. Β It’s less than ten minutes from Briscoe’s apartment. Β
No one answered Briscoe’s door Monday. Β He didn’t return WCCB’s call, either.
Β
Cerise Richardson, Tanner’s sister, tells WCCB all she knows of Briscoe is that “he’s a Kappa also.” Β Murder suspect Smith is also a Kappa and has been photographed throughout the investigation wearing his Greek letters. Β
Β
A friend of Tanner’s tells WCCB the men are more than just fraternity brothers. Β The friend tells WCCB, “What I know about him is he’s Angelo’s business partner, a close friend of his.” Β WCCB found a website for a Charlotte-based food service, paper product and janitorial supply distributor that lists Briscoe as the founder and “Grayson Smith” as his partner. Β
Β
Briscoe has a criminal history in Charlotte that includes an arrest for driving with a revoked license in September 2013 and assault on a female in April 2014. Β Smith’s past criminal history also includes domestic violence charges. Β Tanner’s friend tells WCCB, “It doesn’t surprise me, cause, as you know that saying, ‘birds that flock together do the same thing.’ Β And you know him and Angelo were very close friends and always together, had close ties, so, I’m not surprised.”
Β
WCCB asked a CMPD spokesperson if Lawrence Briscoe could face charges in this case. Β She replied, “this is an ongoing and open investigation.” Β Angelo Smith remains behind bars with no bond. Β He’ll be back in court next month.
