GASTONIA, NC – Former high school wrestlers took the stand Monday in their coach’s sex abuse trial. Gary “Scott” Goins faces nearly two dozen sex charges involving students at East Gaston High.

Prosecutors say Goins created an atmosphere of isolation and control over his wrestlers.  The allegations date back to the late 1990’s.

WCCB is not naming the accusers. But Monday, one former teammate testified about what he says happened during a camping trip with Goins.

“Come and got me from the tent. We walked back in the woods, um, placed a blindfold on us, put us on our knees,” said a former student.  That student told prosecutors he and other young teammates were forced to simulate a sex act.

“On that same camping trip, do you remember having to take your clothes off?” the prosecutor asked. “Yes,” he replied. He says teammates were left in a cave and forced to find their way back to camp.

Defense attorneys say Goins was a tough coach, but never abused anyone.
