UNION COUNTY, NC — We’re learning more about a corrections sergeant who died after crashing his car in Union County.

The Highway Patrol says speed and alcohol may have played a role.  61-year-old William Womack, Jr. hit a stone and brick sign on Weddington Road early Tuesday morning.

Womack worked at the Lanesboro Correctional Institution in Anson County.  Neighbor Troy Pruitt says he heard the crash and tried to help.

“I was just praying,” said Pruitt.  “I was praying that the person in that car would survive the accident, but unfortunately, he did not.”

Investigators say Womack was going more than 100 miles per hour.  They say he was wearing a seat belt.
