Protests were growing in Ferguson Tuesday night as officials pleaded for peace. There’s renewed anger after St. Louis police shot and killed a 23-year-old African American man wielding a knife. That shooting was just miles from where Michael Brown was killed over a week ago. Ten days after the unarmed teen’s death, the streets of Ferguson are simmering. Monday night’s protests were marred by violence and a tough crackdown by police.
The numbers from Monday night’s protests show an escalating situation: 78 arrests, 4 officers injured, and 2 people shot. The situation was supposed to improve: Missouri’s governor sent in the National Guard, President Obama came off vacation and officials removed the midnight curfew. Tuesday, Ferguson police promised to get body cams for cops. Supporters say its a step in the right direction, but it remains to be seen whether it will cool protests.
