Man on the Edge: Should Mariah Quit While She’s Ahead?

 With the music and the backup singers and the kids dancing and all the excitement, Mariah Carey’s recent rendition of “All I Want for Christmas is You” was far from the worst thing ever.  But you might not know that by some of the shade she’s getting lately.  She’s not the Mariah people want to remember.

Her performance may not have been the worst, but it doesn’t get any better when you isolate the lyrics.  The website Gawker started their story on it by saying, “Remember when Mariah Carey could sing?  Most millennials probably can’t.”  They then suggested she ask for a new voice from Santa.

TMZ points out that she passed on taping the performance so she could have an hours-long telephone conference about her divorce.  Which could have impacted her voice.

But it’s also been 20 years since she recorded that song.  And you ability to belt out those high notes changes over time.  It happened to Cher, Robert Plant, Neil Diamond, Axl Rose and others.
