CHARLOTTE, NC — Toll lanes are in the future for three major Charlotte highways.  It’s part of the Governor’s new 10-year transportation plan.

Drivers would pay tolls on I-485 from Rea Road to U.S. 74, on I-77 from Uptown to the South Carolina line, and on Independence Boulevard from Uptown to Matthews.  NC DOT won’t say how much the tolls would cost, but say they are worth the investment.

“What it costs for reliable travel time is going to vary from day to day and from hour to hour,” said NC DOT Spokesperson Warren Cooksey.  “It depends on how many people want that particular service at that particular time.”

Construction on the I-485 express lanes is scheduled to begin in 2018.  The other two projects would begin in 2022 and 2024.
