CHARLOTTE, NC – City Council members will decide Monday night if they want to continue a technology system that can hear and locate gun shots.
The ShotSpotter system started in Uptown two years ago in preparation for the DNC. Since then it’s also been installed in Grier Heights and along Farm Pond Lane near Albemarle Road.
CMPD is asking City Council for $155,000 to extend the contract through August 2015. The police department is also asking Council to give the City Manager authority to extend that contract for up to three more years.
One neighbor says he likes the system but not the price tag.
“It’s a lot fewer gun shots now. But as far as we having to pay for it, no, I don’t think that’s a good idea,” says Grier Heights resident Gordon Withers.
