CHARLOTTE, NC– Parents filled the gymnasium at Charlotte Catholic High School Wednesday night demanding answers and voicing concerns following controversial remarks made by a visiting guest speaker.
On March 21st, Sister Jane Dominic Laurel, a visiting nun from Nashville Tennessee made what students say were derogatory remarks about gays and lesbians, as well as single and divorced parents.
Following the assembly, students started a petition speaking out against the nun’s comments. It has gathered over 2,000 signatures.
Parents who attended the meeting at Charlotte Catholic High say they want clarification from school and church leaders regarding the nun’s speech. Parents also say they want to know why they were not informed about the sensitive topics Sister Laurel would be discussing with students.
“I think it’s an excellent school. They have a wonderful reputation, but I’d really like to see them resolve this issue,” says Kelly Manion, a Charlotte Catholic parent.
At Wednesday night’s meeting, School and church leaders issued an apology to parents and students. They say moving forward, the school plans to ensure parents have a more active role in future school assemblies.
