CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police say they are investigating after an officer was assaulted in north Charlotte.Β
Officer Richard Starnes was assisting another motorcycle officer who was flagged down on West Sugar Creek Road near Reagan Drive in reference to an assault when the alleged assault occurred. Β
The female victim pointed out the suspect’s vehicle to the officers. Β Officer Starnes located the vehicle and attempted to talk with the occupants. Β
Police say during the encounter the occupants grabbed Officer Starnes and drove off, dragging him down the road. Β Officer Starnes was able to get free inside from the vehicle. Β
Police were able to track down the suspect’s vehicle a short time later. Β Five occupants were detained and are being questioned by police. Β Officer Starnes injured his leg but is expected to recover. Β
