Adoptive Parents Of Erica Parsons Arrested On Federal Fraud Charges

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The adoptive parents of Erica Parsons, Sandy and Casey Parsons, were arrested on federal criminal indictment charges for fraud Wednesday morning.  The couple were released on bond but must wear electronic monitoring devices.

The criminal indictment was unsealed after the couple was arrested in Fayetteville by the FBI.

Sandy Parsons, 40, and Casey Parsons, 39, were charged with committing tax fraud, mail fraud, theft of government funds, identity theft and engaged in a conspiracy to defraud the government. 

The Parsons received government funded adoptive assistance, medicaid, social security and food and nutrition service benefits for Erica even though she did not live with them. The couple committed the fraud through mail. 

The Parsons are charged with one count conspiracy to defraud the government which carries a max sentence of five years in prison and a $25,000 fine, twenty counts of theft of government funds, each carrying a max sentence of of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine and twenty counts of mail fraud, each carrying a max sentence of two years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Casey Parsons is also charged with one count of false pretense in a health care matter, fifteen counts of aggravated identity theft, two counts of false statement to a government agency, six counts of aiding in the preparation of a false tax return and six counts of wire fraud.

The Parsons are scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court today at 2:30 p.m. in Winston-Salem.
