Remember the movie Jackass? Do you also remember the one thing missing from all of those horribly stupid stunts? None of them were done by women. And that is a key issue according to some social scientists, because of what it means for men and mortality. Basically it means men are more likely to die a stupid death.
They came to that conclusion by doing a quick audit of the “Darwin Award” winners over the past 24 years: the tongue-in-cheek recognition of people who “removed themselves from the gene pool” by doing incredibly dumb activities. Stuff like trying to take selfies with wild elephants, or getting drunk and trying to slide down elevator shaft cables. Out of 318 cases, 282 of them went to men. Because men take stupid risks.
But there are some women out there who do stupid things too. Let’s face it: the “duckface selfie” is a chick thing. So is driving and putting on makeup. And sending guys intimate pictures from wildly insecure cell phones: dumb.
