NEWTON, NC – 34-year-old Sharman Odom smirked at cameras Saturday while walking out of the Newton Police station. Police arrested Odom in Winston Salem Saturday and charged him with the murder of 31-year-old Maggie Daniels, a former teacher and counselor in Newton.

Newton Police say interviews and physical evidence obtained during the investigation led them to Odom.

“I’m extremely relieved, it’s something that everybody’s been thinking about since it happened,” said Patricia Ybanzez, a Newton resident.

Daniels’ body was discovered on June 28th inside her home at the Windsor Apartments. Police say Odom lived in the same complex.

“Really terrifying to know that this guy’s family has been living here and God knows how long he’s been hanging out, scouting and whatever else he’s been doing,” said Ybanzez.

Odom goes by Crisspy Shabazz. On his Instagram and Twitter accounts he says he’s a model scout for a magazine and a vodka rep.

People who’ve had dealings with Odom tell WCCB that Odom was a promoter who held parties and promoted celebrities in Charlotte. They say he seemed ‘goofy and harmless”.

WCCB discovered Odom has a criminal history in Mecklenburg County.

In August of 2012, he was arrested and charged with robbery, assault by strangulation and second degree rape. No word if he was convicted on those charges.

“I didn’t think they would find him but I’m glad they’ve got somebody that they do think did this because there needs to be some justice for what was done,” said Janice Engle, a Newton resident.
