Mom on Mission for Justice This Holiday Season

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – All Angela Christy has of her son this Christmas are pictures. She says tearfully, “I’m not gonna see him grow up, we’re not gonna be able to see him do anything. He won’t be able to get married, we won’t be able to see him have kids, we won’t see anything.”Β

21-year-old Stephen Poston of Concord was stabbed to death in Cooleemee, North Carolina last month. Christy says her son was trying to break up a fight. 37-year-old Steven McCarter is now in the Davie County jail, facing felony first degree murder. Multiple media reports show McCarter is no stranger to violence. Christy and Poston’s father, Philip Poston, say they’ve researched McCarter, and several years ago, a South Carolina judge decided to sentence McCarter to probation in the death of his infant daughter.
Β
Christy says McCarter then violated probation by assaulting a female and was sent back to prison. He got out this past July. Christy’s son was killed in November. Poston says, “He didn’t need to be on the street. They can’t fail again this time.”
Β
The parents blame the justice system, and in particular, that South Carolina judge, for letting McCarter walk. Christy says, “I don’t want this taken lightly,” and, “I want them to know people are watching.”

Stephen Poston worked with his dad loading and unloading trucks. His parents say he wanted to be a firefighter or in the military, but asthma kept him from those goals. We have a call into the Cooleemee Police Chief to get more details about the investigation. McCarter will be back in court January 8th.
