Β CHARLOTTE, NC — Hundreds rallied and chanted in Marshall Park Monday night to express the message: black lives matter. Β It follows a week of intense demonstrations in Baltimore over the death of Freddie Gray, who was in police custody.

Organizers of Monday’s rally tell WCCB Charlotte they want to show support for all of the black men killed during police interactions.

“I want people to know that there are African American people out there that want to stand up,” said south Charlotte resident Jessica Smith. Β “They want to protest, they want to speak out, they want to use their voice and not violence.”

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg chapter of the NAACP organized Monday’s rally.
