ANDERSON COUNTY, SC — A hitchhiker is accused of shooting a couple that picked him up in South Carolina on Christmas Eve and leaving them on the side of an interstate.

The couple picked up the 22-year-old along I-85 in Anderson County.  Investigators say he offered them money to take him to the Georgia state line.  The Sheriff says he asked to stop for a bathroom break, then shot the couple in the back of the head.  The woman died; the man is still in the hospital.

“He shortened their lives, and my son’s laying up there, well, he’s in critical condition,” said the man’s mother, Barbara Dobson.  “And he’s fighting for his life, and this is a senseless act.”

Deputies eventually stopped the suspect for speeding.  He admitted he considered shooting them until he saw the dash-mounted camera in the patrol car.
