Β CHARLOTTE, NC — It’s been about 40 years in the making, but Charlotte’s outer loop will be complete next month.
The DOT says the final leg of I-485 in northeast Charlotte will open on Friday, June 5. Β The 5.7 mile stretch connects Old Statesville Road to I-85. Β The opening will complete the 67-mile loop.
Northeast Charlotte resident Eric Wagstrom says he chose where to live based on the interstate.
“My job is in Concord,” said Wagstrom. Β “I figure that anywhere that has good access to that particular freeway is going to limit my commutes to work every morning.”
The final section of I-485 was supposed to open earlier this year, but the weather held up the construction. Β If it’s not open by late July, the contractor faces fines.
