NEW YORK CITY — A man wanted on weapons charges in Rowan County is reportedly connected to the terror group ISIS. Federal investigators believe he’s involved in trafficking weapons, and WCCB Charlotte has learned he could soon be brought back to North Carolina.
The FBI arrested Donald Ray Morgan at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport last week. He was returning to the U.S. after an eight-month stay in Lebanon. He’s wanted here on illegal weapons possession charges from 2012.
The New York Daily News reports investigators think he was brokering deals for military-grade weapons and ammo from his Rowan County home. Tweets he posted supporting ISIS caught the attention of the feds.
Chris Swecker, former FBI Assistant Director, says home-grown terrorists are a real threat. “Actually, this individual is the perfect specimen. He’s a U.S.-born person with a U.S. name. Knows the culture. Knows the language. For whatever reason may have gone over to the dark side. And he is very useful to the terrorist organizations like ISIS,” he said.
We found Morgan has arrests in Salisbury dating back to 1991. Investigators do not think he is involved in any active ISIS plots. The terror group is trying to establish an Islamic extremist state in Syria and Iraq.
