CHARLOTTE, NC —Β Tonight, parents made a plea to the school board: “Let us in our kids’ schools!”
They made signs at the Action NC office in east Charlotte before the meeting. Β Right now, CMS requires volunteers have a driver’s license or social security card to volunteer in their children’s schools. Β Advocates say that excludes undocumented parents and people who have prior convictions.
“Their children go home and ask their mom, ‘My friend’s parents participate. Β Why can’t you you?’ Β It’s breaking a lot of these parents’ hearts to tell their children, ‘I can’t!'” said Hector Vaca of Action NC.
Action NC wants CMS to add other options like passports or fingerprinting.
