Parents Rally for Changes to CMS Volunteer Policy

CHARLOTTE, NC — Tonight, parents made a plea to the school board: “Let us in our kids’ schools!”

They made signs at the Action NC office in east Charlotte before the meeting.  Right now, CMS requires volunteers have a driver’s license or social security card to volunteer in their children’s schools.  Advocates say that excludes undocumented parents and people who have prior convictions.

“Their children go home and ask their mom, ‘My friend’s parents participate.  Why can’t you you?’  It’s breaking a lot of these parents’ hearts to tell their children, ‘I can’t!'” said Hector Vaca of Action NC.

Action NC wants CMS to add other options like passports or fingerprinting.
