GASTONIA, NC — Gaston County school officials are refusing to comment on a former high school wrestling coach’s conviction on sex charges involving students.  During the trial for Gary Scott Goins, the judge mentioned that school officials knew about the allegations.

“We’ve heard that various officials at various levels in the school system were alerted of problems, and nothing was done… except that the coach kept bringing home the gold,” said Superior Court Judge Jesse Caldwell.

Goins touched wrestlers at East Gaston High School inappropriately and forced them to perform sex acts.  Most of the incidents happened in the late 1990s.

WCCB Charlotte asked the school district if it’s changing its reporting protocol or taking any action against school employees who may have been told about the sex abuse.  Spokesperson Todd Hagans says the district is not commenting and referred us to their code of ethics and conduct, which only outlines what’s appropriate contact and what’s not.
