Hercules Tires Big South Championship is coming to the Queen City!
CHARLOTTE, NC–Get ready, because the Hercules Tires Big South Championship is coming to the Queen City! With the tournament less than two weeks away, they’ve been getting ready to bring college hoops to the Bojangles Coliseum in a major way!
Many people don’t know this, but the Big South headquarters have been in Charlotte for over 25 years! For the associate commissioner, Mark Simpson, having the tournament here just makes sense!
Simpson says, “It’s the home city of our headquarters! The conference office has been here for 26 years and it’s right in the middle of our footprint or our 12 members (Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina) and being able to host out crown jewel of our basketball championship and to be able to send two champions to the NCAA Tournament to realize their dream, it’s just such an incredible opportunity and we’re so excited about it.”
Tip-off starts March 1st and will go until the 6th. Tickets are still available and Simpson says prices are just $15, but you better get them now because he wouldn’t want you to miss out!
“They’re $15 per day for Tuesday through Friday games. You can leave and come back and you could catch all four games. If you want to watch one game and come for a later game, you can do that! The semi finals are $15 for each session and Sunday’s championship games are $15 each and to be able to bring your family… It’s something affordable to do.”, Simpson said.
Big South Tournament director, James Holland says being able to have this championship in the queen city means so much to him! You may remember Holland from his basketball days with the Harlem Globetrotters and how he was a stand-out player at Garinger High School!
Holland says, “Growing up in North Carolina, it’s all about basketball! We play a little football here but it’s always been about basketball, and coming back and being a part of bringing something new to Charlotte. Charlotte has changed tremendously since I left about 25 years ago and now to come back where there’s a pro football team, pro basketball team and there’s a big time basketball tournament.. I mean this is just so exciting for me!”
Not only is the Hercules Tires Big South Championship going to be a lot of fun, but they’re donating funds and resources to kids right here at Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools!
Simpson says, “We’re really excited to be able to host the education day and thankful to the US Army ROTC, we’re putting on an event! We’re going to have informational sessions all morning, colleges that these students can meet and administrators for our campuses to learn more about our schools and to further their education. They’ll be able to stick around to watch a basketball game and watch the college athletes! We’re building and working with CMS to create another fundraising opportunity to give back to the local school community with everything their doing to educate the young kids through high school age.”
